The fruit of the olive tree, or olea europaea, also known as the "European olive," is an olive. The Mediterranean Basin, South America, South Africa, India, China, Australia, New Zealand, Mexico, and the United States are all countries where olive trees are produced. Different types of olives are a staple in Mediterranean cuisine and a substantial export for Spain, Italy, Greece, Turkey, and Morocco. Although kalamata olives are also popular, green and black olives are more frequently found in the US. They are frequently cut into slices, eaten whole in dishes, or pressed to make olive oil, another important agricultural product from the Mediterranean region. Consuming whole olives or using olive oil in specific recipes may help ward off a number of health issues.
