The anticipation of the new year is only a blink away and as everyone gears up to put on their best outfit and dancing shoes, having a few cocktail recipes at the tip of your fingers helps. Whether you want to have a couple of drinks before you head out to a party or are hosting one of your own, there’s always going to be a rare handful in a crowd that would take anything but a sugary sweet cocktail. While savoury cocktails like the Bloody Mary are pretty much the only options on a party drinks menu more often than not, this bright green cocktail is an interesting addition to the gamut of quick cocktail recipes to shake up at a moment’s notice.

While a martini might seem a bit too complicated to nail in terms of perfect proportions, this ludicrously green cocktail goes perfect with the colour theme of the season. It has a savoury-spicy edge from the jalapenos but also cools you down because of the cucumber and can be easily adapted with any type of liquor of your choice. Although the recipe uses tequila, you can replace it with gin or vodka, both of which work beautifully and complement the strong, prominent flavours.

Ingredients:

  • 40 ml tequila or mezcal
  • 40 ml cucumber juice
  • 1 tablespoon lime juice
  • Few slices Jalapeno
  • 20 ml sparkling water

Method:

  • To make the cucumber juice, simply blend a cucumber with half a cup of water and strain. Set aside until needed. Muddle a few slices of jalapeno according to your preferred spice level along with the cucumber juice.
  • In a cocktail shaker, add the muddled cucumber juice along with the tequila and lime juice and shake well. Strain it into a glass filled with ice and top up with sparkling water. Garnish with a slice of pickled jalapeno or dehydrated lime.
  • If you can’t source fresh jalapenos, use 20 ml of the juice from a jar of pickled jalapenos and 30 ml of the cucumber juice instead. You could use a few slices of the pickled jalapenos to muddle with the cucumber juice, if you prefer your drink to have a sharp edge of heat.
