Navratri is one of the most significant Hindu festivals, celebrated over nine days to honour the goddess Durga in her various forms. During this auspicious period, many devotees observe fasts, offering prayers and following a special diet to purify the mind and body. Fasting during Navratri involves abstaining from grains, legumes, and certain vegetables like onions and garlic. Instead, the focus is on satvik (pure) foods, which are light, easily digestible, and believed to have a calming effect on the body.

The food typically consumed during Navratri includes ingredients like buckwheat flour (kuttu ka atta), water chestnut flour (singhare ka atta), barnyard millet (samak rice), potatoes, sweet potatoes, sabudana (tapioca pearls), and various fruits. Dairy products like yogurt and paneer are also commonly used.
A traditional Navratri thali often includes dishes like Kuttu Ki Poori (buckwheat flour bread), Aloo Sabzi (potato curry), Sabudana Khichdi (a savoury tapioca pearl dish), and Samak Rice Pulao. For dessert, one might enjoy Makhana Kheer (foxnut pudding) or Singhare Ka Halwa (water chestnut flour pudding). These dishes are usually seasoned lightly with rock salt (sendha namak) as regular salt is avoided. Navratri food wholesome, nutritious and also aligns with the spiritual and cleansing nature of the festival.
