Monsoon has finally arrived in full force across India, and while this might be leading to pleasant weather in some parts, in others, it is leading to flash floods, landslides and more. Over the last week, persistent heavy rains have hit large parts of North India, especially Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana and Delhi. The Indian Meteorological Department has issued a red alert for several Himachal Pradesh districts and orange alerts for others. Meanwhile, large parts of Delhi are witnessing severe waterlogging and heavy rains as the Yamuna River has flooded.

Given the fact that this is just the beginning of monsoon in most parts of the country, it is likely that the monsoon flood alerts will continue for a while. During a monsoon flood alert, everything from electricity supply to food supply can get severely impacted. India is already experiencing a tomato price hike crisis due to severe rainfall in states like Karnataka, so it is also likely that the monsoon flood alerts in all impacted states will also result in food shortage, food damage, supply issues and inflation.

Here are some recommendations for what to include in your monsoon flood alert survival kit.

1. Non-Perishable Foods

Choose non-perishable food items that require no cooking or refrigeration. Canned goods such as canned meats (tuna, chicken), fruits, vegetables, soups, and beans. Energy bars and granola bars are also a good option as they are compact, lightweight, and provide a quick source of energy.

2. Dry Fruits And Nuts

These nutrient-rich snacks provide energy, essential vitamins, and minerals. They require no cooking and have a long shelf life, making them a convenient and healthy option. Dry fruits like almonds, cashews, raisins, and pistachios can serve as a quick source of sustenance, providing nourishment and boosting morale during challenging times.

3. Bottled Water

Ensure you have an ample supply of clean drinking water. Store at least one gallon of water per person per day for a minimum of three days. You may also consider including water purification tablets or a water filter in case you need to use alternative water sources.

4. Ready-To-Eat Snacks

Pack snacks that are high in energy and provide sustenance, such as granola bars, trail mix, jerky, or dried fruit. Include packaged snacks that are popular in India, such as namkeens, bhujia, mathri, or roasted chana (gram) for some familiar and flavorful options.

5. Rice, Flours, Lentils And Staples

Keep a stock of commonly consumed staples that can provide sustenance during emergencies. Include a sufficient quantity of rice and lentils in sealed, waterproof containers. Pack flour, salt, and oil/ghee in airtight containers and consider including a small portable stove and fuel if possible. Include small quantities of essential spices like salt, pepper, turmeric, and chili powder, as well as any preferred condiments or seasonings. These can enhance the taste of your meals and make them more enjoyable.

6. Tea, Coffee And Beverages

Pack some tea bags, instant coffee, or coffee powder, along with sugar or sweeteners, to ensure you have a comforting hot beverage option during challenging times. Consider including powdered milk or condensed milk sachets. These can be mixed with clean water to provide a source of dairy and can be consumed on their own or added to other foods like tea or instant coffee.

7. Baby Food And Dietary Inclusions

If you have infants or young children, make sure to include an adequate supply of baby food, formula, and other essential supplies like diapers. If you have specific dietary requirements or allergies, ensure you have enough suitable food options in your kit. Also take into account regional food preferences and any dietary restrictions or preferences specific to your family's needs.

Other Essentials During Monsoon Flood Alerts

Apart from food and water supplies, you also need to stock up on a few more essentials. Here are some more essentials for your monsoon flood alert survival kits.

1. Portable Stove And Fuel

Stocking up on a portable stove and fuel can be invaluable during monsoon flood alerts. In situations where cooking facilities are unavailable or disrupted, a portable stove allows you to prepare hot meals, boil water for purification, and maintain a sense of normalcy. It provides flexibility and self-sufficiency, ensuring you have the means to cook essential food items and meet your nutritional needs despite challenging circumstances.

2. Utensils And Can Opener

Include a manual can opener and disposable utensils or plastic cutlery for opening canned foods and eating. These tools enable you to open canned foods and consume them safely. Having disposable utensils or plastic cutlery ensures you can eat your meals without the need for regular washing, conserving water resources. These simple but essential items contribute to maintaining hygiene, convenience, and the ability to consume the food in your survival kit efficiently.

3. Sanitizers And Cleaning Supplies

These items help maintain hygiene and prevent the spread of diseases in challenging conditions. Sanitizers, disinfectants, handwashes, dish soaps and cleaning supplies allow you to keep your hands, utensils, and surfaces clean, reducing the risk of contamination. They provide an extra layer of protection and contribute to the overall well-being and health of individuals and families during flood situations.

4. Medications And First Aid

Having an ample supply of necessary medications ensures continuity of treatment, especially for those with chronic conditions. First aid kits equip you to handle minor injuries or illnesses that may occur during the floods, providing immediate care before professional help arrives. These supplies can be lifesaving, promoting health and well-being during challenging times. Remember to check expiration dates periodically and rotate as needed.

5. Additional Supplies

Alongside food and water, consider adding other necessary supplies like a flashlight, batteries, phone and laptop chargers, a whistle, a multipurpose tool, and a portable radio to stay informed. Remember to regularly check and update your survival kit, replacing expired items and adjusting the supplies based on your specific needs. Stay vigilant during the flood alert, follow the instructions of local authorities, and prioritize your safety.
