The year began with a bang, with a host of festivals and celebrations taking up most of January. Another thing, apart from Lohri, Makar Sankranti and Republic Day preparations, that captured our attention the most were the bizarre food trends. Although this isn’t a new phenomenon and we’ve survived several food trends in the last two years particularly, there is something special about the ones that have been coming up in the first month of the new year itself. Most of them have revolved around ice cream. December, 2021 saw a unique green chilli-flavoured ice cream creating a rage on the Internet and the recent creation is being launched at a McDonald’s menu.
Yes, you read that right. McDonald’s Thailand shared an image of a to-be-launched item on their dessert menu and the netizens are stumped. The novel ice cream sundae that is being added to the list of desserts is made from chilli paste and pork floss, induced in a vanilla ice cream. This interesting (or rather strange) take on the ice cream sundae was shared by the global fast-food chain on their Facebook page. On one hand, some netizens left comments like, “No and No. Ice cream is not meant to taste like meat. Are they bored or what?” to the news shared on Twitter, on the other hand, some seemed to express interest in trying this new creation and requested it to be introduced in their region.

Although we feel really sorry for the innocent cup of ice cream that has to undergo this tremulous makeover, it hasn't been spared in the past either. In case you have missed out on some of the most bizarre ice cream trends of 2022, here is a recap.
1. Masala Dosa Ice Cream Roll
A recent Zomato notification read something like, Either have dosa or have ice cream. Don’t order dosa ice cream please and we couldn’t agree more. This creation happened a week back when a Delhi vendor was spotted selling something called Masala Dosa Ice Cream Roll. Take a look at the viral video by @thegreatindianfoodie.

It can be seen that the chef first chops the masala dosa into smaller pieces. He then adds large scoops of vanilla ice cream to it and mixes the two together. Once it becomes like a smooth paste, he spreads them out on the freezer to roll them into ice cream rolls. These are then served on a plate along with, you won’t believe what! Aloo masala and coconut chutney, yes unfortunately, that’s the truth. We still can’t believe that the two delicious treats had to suffer this abomination. The video has garnered about 22k likes and crossed over 2 million views.
2. Momos Ice Cream Roll
Yet another bizarre creation waits your attention. Delhiites and their love from momos is no stranger to us. We’ve not restricted ourselves to the basic steamed and fried kind and have gone on to give them a tandoori and afghani touch too. The list of momo varieties will be an endless one today but this one is going to leave you devastated for sure. There is a Delhi shop that is serving a momos ice cream roll, say what? Firstly, the cute little momos are chopped. Then some milk and ice cream is thrown on it and all of this is mixed together like one mesh of flavours. Suddenly, the chef adds some red chutney which is generally served with momos, to this already bizarre mixture. Layering them on the freezer, he rolls them up and wait for the garnishing now. He slathers it with some more momos chutney and mayonnaise, which are usually served alongside the appetizer/snack. Till now, it has reached close to 700K views and counting.
3. Khandvi And Dhokla Ice Cream Roll
This is the most recent addition to the family of weird ice cream food trends. Do you like Gujarati snacks? Foods like Dhokla and Khandvi are quite popular from their cuisine. We don’t know if they’ll be able to forgive us after watching this video.

The latest base for your ice cream roll is dhokla and khandvi. Two separate rolls are made with dhokla and khandvi in the same way. Dhokla is crushed and ice cream is added. Both are mixed and spread to be made into rolls. This is then topped with some dhokla and green chilli. Similarly, khandvi roll follows the method of preparation which is then garnished with some khandvi and green chilli on top. These two weird experiments by one chef have left the netizens appalled.
We pity the ice cream and all the other casualties involved in the process. R.I.P. Vanilla Ice Cream.
