When friends and relatives used to visit as a child, there was always a box of jujubes involved. Usually picked up en route in Mahabaleshwar along with the omnipresent box of chikki. These sweets are something that all Indians have enjoyed at some point or the other, but as we get older, they’re slowly losing popularity.

Revisit the nostalgia with this simple recipe that can be made with juice and a few household ingredients in a snap. They have the same jelly texture without the use of any gelatin and can throw you back into your best memories in just one bite.

Any store-bought orange juice will do the trick here, the main part is getting the texture just right. Get creative and use any type of juice to create a whole range of flavours, or use freshly squeezed juice for a healthier version. You can make big batches to parcel up and hand out around Christmas to spread some festive cheer.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup Orange Juice (I have used fresh orange juice)
  • ⅓ cup Cornstarch
  • ½  cup Powdered Sugar
  • 1 tbsp Melted Butter
  • Pinch of salt

Method:

  • Add Orange juice, Powdered sugar and Cornstarch to a pan. Mix well.
  • Cook on low flame for about 5-6 minutes till the mixture thickens.
  • At this stage, add butter and salt. Cook on low flame for 12-15 minutes. The mixture will separate from the pan and resemble the consistency of a dough.
  • Wrap in a cling sheet and refrigerate.
  • Cut into cubes and roll in powdered sugar. Enjoy!!
