•1 cup chopped walnuts

Method:

•Set the oven to 350 degrees for preheating. Cream the butter and brown sugar in a bowl. Stir in the egg and vanilla. Combining the following four ingredients, add to creamed mixture. Adding nuts is optional.

•Make three 10x1-inch rolls out of the dough on a lightly dusted board. Wrap each roll in wax paper tightly. For at least 12 hours, freeze.

•Slice into 3/8-inch thick pieces, then arrange on oiled baking pans. 6 to 8 minutes of baking. To cool, transfer to a wire rack.

Optional ingredients:

•Semisweet or dark chocolate bars work great for this recipe. Finely slice two to four ounces of a chocolate bar, almost like you would mince garlic, and stir it in just before serving. Because they are huge and make holes in the cookie dough when you slice it, chocolate chips don't work as well for this recipe.
