When it comes to any popular food in the world, one thing certain is that there’s always more than one theory behind its invention. The first known recipe for something similar to today’s potato chips is in William Kitchiner's book that was published in 1817 and soon after turned out to be a bestseller in the United States as well as the United Kingdom. Decades later than the first recorded recipe, a legend associated the creation of potato chips with Saratoga Springs, New York. By the late nineteenth century, a popular version of the story attributed the dish to George Crum, a cook who was trying to appease an unhappy customer in the restaurant he worked at. The customer kept complaining about how soggy his chips were so in order to win over the heart of his customer, he finally created the thin, crispy and seasoned potato chips we know today. These delicious chips soon came to be called as ‘Saratoga Chips’, a name that persisted into the middle-twentieth century. That at time, Crum was already renowned as a chef and he owned a lakeside restaurant by 1860 which he called Crum's House. Intriguingly enough, the 'Saratoga Chips' brand name still exists today
