Among the famous tales of Krishna's childhood, according to tradition, one gave rise to the Chappan Bhog. The legend goes that in his youth, Krishna convinced all the villagers in Braj to worship the Govardhan Hill instead of Lord Indra. This angered Indra, who sent torrential rains to flood the village. Krishna protected the people by lifting the whole Govardhan Hill on his little finger and provided shelter for seven days. Krishna did not eat throughout those seven days. After that ordeal, to show their gratitude and love, the villagers offered him 56 different dishes—one meal for each that he had missed in those seven days. This 56 Bhog thali offering to Krishna has prevailed ever since, reflecting plenty and variety in the diet which nature has to offer and the purity of the faith of Krishna's devotees.

Begin with Dairy Delights

Since Lord Krishna is known for his love of dairy, start with items like Makhan Mishri, Kheer, Rabri, and white butter. You can also have paneer dishes and Chhena-based sweets like Rasgulla.

Savoury Snacks

Prepare a variety of savory items like Mathri, Namak Pare, Kachori, Pakoras, and Chutneys. These can be prepared in advance and stored.

Traditional Sweets

No Bhog is complete without sweets. These can include the all-time favourites like Laddus, Jalebi, Malpua, Ghevar, Moong Dal Halwa. These could be prepared in different quantities to total up to the count.

Fruits and Dry Fruits

Fresh seasonal fruits like bananas, grapes, apples, and mangoes may be included. The nuts include almonds, cashews, pistachios, and raisins along with coconut slices add to the variety.

Grains and Lentils

Steamed rice, Khichdi, and a variety of rotis. A mix of lentil preparations like Dal Tadka or Chana Dal should be kept at hand. Do remember to add on, for the vegetable dishes, Baingan ki Sabji, Dudhi ki Sabji, and Saag.

Beverages and Other Things

Top up with beverages such as almond milk, Shikanji, and chaach. Even simple things like honey, ghee, and Malai can be a part of the bhog. To lend a touch of tradition, add Saunf, Paan, and Supari.

Practical Tips to Make Chappan Bhog at Home

Plan Ahead

Make a list of what you want to prepare and plan ahead for when you are going to prepare the dishes. Sweets, snacks, and dry fruits can be prepared a few days in advance.

Simplify the Menu

While the actual Chappan Bhog is made up of 56 different items, you can simplify by either making small portions of 4-5 ladoos or making varieties of somewhat similar dishes. For example, make different types of ladoos or different milk-based drinks.

Get Help

Engage other family members to come and participate in the preparation. It not only reduces your workload but also induces a feeling of communal devotion.

Use Good Quality Ingredients

This being an offering to the Lord, use the best quality ingredients and prepare everything in a clean and peaceful environment.

Be Calm and Devoted

Remember, the crux of Chappan Bhog is in devotion and sincerity. So, even when you can't prepare exactly 56 items, what matters are your efforts and love for Lord Krishna.
