Sandwiches are so ubiquitous now that it's difficult to picture life without them. However, this wasn't always the case. The sandwich as we know and love it today was invented in England in 1762, according to history. The majority of food historians concur that John Montagu, often known as ‘the 4th Earl of Sandwich’, invented the sandwich. Montagu had a reputation for being a compulsive gambler who would spend a lot of time at the cards. When he became hungry after a long day of playing, he asked the kitchen for something he could eat with his hands without getting up from his seat. He was given a sandwich, consisting of two pieces of bread with meat in the centre.

From that day onward, the sandwich spread began throughout all England. It was a well-known dish by the time of the Revolutionary War. The sandwich took a long time to arrive in America. It might be that Americans were reluctant to adopt international trends. In 1815, the very first sandwich was published in a U.S. cookbook. It was actually a tongue sandwich, not the kind of sandwich we eat today.

  • A handful of fresh dill

Method:

  • In a big bowl, mix the mayonnaise, Italian dressing mix, and softened cream cheese.
  • Mix with a hand mixer on a medium speed until everything is mixed as well as the mixture is fluffy and light.
  • 1 spoonful of the cream cheese mixture should be spread on each slice of mini rye or baguette bread.
