The Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) have joined hands with a popular delivery app – Swiggy, in order to deliver pre-ordered meals to those travelling by train. The official announcement, which was made yesterday, mentioned that the meals must be ordered via the railway’s e-catering portal. Kicking off the service at four stations to begin with – namely Bengaluru, Bhubaneshwar, Vijayawada and Vishakhapatnam – the plan is to expand the service to over 59 city stations in the course of six months.

Being the second time that the IRCTC has partnered with a food delivery platform, they also joined hands with Zomato in 2023 to supply meals at New Delhi, Prayagraj, Lucknow, Varnasi and Kanpur railway stations. This partnership also hopes that passengers get to experience the culinary diversity across the country, using digital means to ensure meals are delivered to them on time. The railway service also plans on collaborating with 17 aggregators to give travellers some great experience en route their destination.

In an official press statement shared by the delivery platform, they said that, “One of the challenges encountered by travellers during extended journeys is the paucity of diverse culinary options. Through this integration, passengers aboard designated trains now have the option to savour good-quality, warm meals delivered right to their seats, thereby transforming their travel into a convenient and delightful culinary experience.” In addition to this, the IRCTC have also been toying with the idea of extending their collaboration to deliver consumer goods, via the grocery service known as Instamart.
