Do you usually zero in on a vacation spot depending on its local food? Turns out most Indian travellers do the same! India's culinary tourism market has witnessed significant growth in recent years and is set to expand further in the coming decade. According to a report by Future Market Insights published last year, the market is projected to substantially increase, reaching over $182.5 billion by 2033. 

In 2023, it was valued at more than $23 billion. Culinary tourism provides an excellent opportunity for travellers to immerse themselves in the diverse local cuisines of various destinations and savour authentic flavours.

A survey by SOTC identified some of the top Indian cities popular among tourists for experiencing local delicacies and gaining a deeper understanding of the destinations through their food. The Financial Express reported that the list includes Delhi, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Kerala, and Lucknow.

The India Holiday Survey Report by SOTC Travel has shed light on the current travel preferences of Indian tourists, revealing that around 45% consider food a key factor in their holiday planning. Similarly, a report by the Food Travel Monitor found that 53% of travel enthusiasts choose their vacation spots based on local cuisine. Additionally, Jersey Island Holidays reported that 95% of global travellers identify as food tourists.

A survey conducted in October 2024 highlighted that many Indian tourists prioritize culinary experiences when visiting destinations like Thailand, Turkey, and Laos. India, in turn, has become a favoured destination for food enthusiasts from around the world, with a significant number of travellers from Vietnam and Japan visiting to indulge in its diverse local flavours.
