Watermelon

One of the most common and affordable melons, this one is also known as Tarbooj in India and the scientific name is Citrullus Lanatus. Watermelon is a must at any summer event, and if you've already tasted it, it should be no mystery why. If you want to pick up a ripe watermelon at the grocery store or farmer's market, look for a deep green watermelon with a cream or yellow base. Take it and tap it firmly against the landing if it sounds deep and hollow, it's ready to eat.

Cantaloupe

Cantaloupe‘s scientific name is Cucumis melo var. Cantalupensis and it is also known as Kharbooj in India. Unlike watermelon, cantaloupe has a firmer, less floury texture. So not only can it be consumed as it is, but also as a part of fruit chaats and as dessert it holds its shape and isn't so watery. They are most delicious in late spring. Look for melons that are brown with light green lines on the outside and without soft spots.

Muskmelon

Cucumis melo is the scientific name of Honeydew and in India it is also known as Meetha Tarbooj and Muskmelon. Seasoned from June to October, muskmelon is wildly underrated. It can add a light sweetness to salads, frozen yoghurt, smoothies, and even cocktails. You know the melon is ripe when the rind is creamy yellow and smooth or waxy to the touch and the bottom should feel a little springy.

Galia Melon

Galia Melon is more commonly known as Sarda in India. Galia is a cross between Cantaloupe and Honeydew. It looks like honeydew on the inside because of its pale green flesh, but on the outside it is closer to a cantaloupe with its reticulated skin. They taste even sweeter than a ripe cantaloupe, so serve it as a refreshing dessert with summer berries or vanilla ice cream, or turn it into a sorbet.

Canary Melon

Named for its sunny yellow skin, the taste of canary melon is like a honey sauce with a distinct spiciness. It has a firmer texture than a floury watermelon, like a pear. In Asia and South America, where it is cultivated, it is used in fruit salads and eaten raw for breakfast. They also pair beautifully with fresh citrus fruits and herbs. In India, it is often confused with Kharbooja, though it looks quite different.

Honey Globe Melon

Honey Globe Melon is also known as petha in parts of North India, and is quite similar to muskmelon. Just like the muskmelon and honeydew, this variety is hard to find because of its short harvest time. It is one of the sweetest melons and has a thick white or white-green striped rind. Honey globe melons get their name from their round shape.
