Filter coffee, or ‘filter kaapi’ as we know it, is a traditional beverage that is much popular in South India, made by mixing frothed and boiled milk with the infusion obtained by percolation brewing of finely ground coffee powder in a small, traditional Indian filter.

Legend has it that sometime in the 16th Century, Baba Budan - a revered Sufi saint from Karnataka - discovered coffee on his pilgrimage to Mecca. He wanted to grow some beans back in his hometown too, so he smuggled seven coffee beans from the Yemeni port of Mocha in his garments. The beans were planted in Chandragiri Hills in the Chikmagalur district of Mysore State and the rest, they say, is history. The British also played a part in popularising the beverage further, they boosted coffee plantations across Western ghats and gained good revenue.

The Indian filter coffee was one of the most sought-after beverages in the India Coffee Houses run by the Coffee Board of India in the 1940s. Filter coffee is known for being a strong beverage as it is. Now, imagine adding a bit of whiskey to it. Here’s a recipe you must try soon.

Method:

  • 50 ml Oaksmith® Gold Whiskey
  • 50 ml coconut milk
  • 30 ml filter coffee decoction
  • 45 ml dark jaggery syrup
  • Ice

Glass:

  • Filter Coffee service ware

Method:

  • Add all the ingredients together in a shaker with ice and pass the liquid between the two shakers to mix. Just like how a professional coffee maker would ‘throw’ filter kaapi between two mugs. This will bring in a nice element of theatre into your drink.
