In a major decision, the Haryana Government has now allowed big corporate houses in Gurgaon to serve low alcohol content drinks like beer and wine. The decision that will be applicable starting June 12, is predicted to bring a big change in the work culture of Gurugram. The groundbreaking decision is a part of the Haryana Excise Policy for the fiscal year 2023-24.

The decision comes as good news to big corporate houses as it has several criteria attached to it. To qualify for serving alcohol, the minimum employees of the office should be 5000 and the area it covers should be a minimum of 1 lakh square feet. The office area can be self-owned or leased. This move is being seen as largely progressive and the main motive behind it is to have a better and more productive work environment.

The licensing process has been explained in the policy in clear words. It states that “The procedure for grant of licence (L-10F) shall be as applicable to the bar licences. The licence shall be granted on payment of an annual fixed fee of Rs 10 lakh on terms and conditions specified by the excise and taxation commissioner,". The rule also states that the licensee will pay an amount of Rs 3 lakh besides the license.

This move is largely being perceived as a bold, innovative and progressive move because it may help the employees feel more valued at work due to the added perk. A major part of working in these corporates is to build connections and work together, and this move might accelerate the process. On the other hand, some have pointed out the disadvantages of a decision like this and how it might cause a slowing down of work or indiscipline in the office area. While implementing this new policy, the offices will be required to make internal rules to avoid abuse of the newly granted alcohol privilege.

The decision to serve wine and beer in corporate houses is indeed a progressive one and can be great in collaborative growth of all parties involved. As with everything else, for the perks to outweigh the flaws, work ethics and self-restraint have to be put on priority.
