Bread is the most go-to breakfast item in the kitchen. It is readily available and easy-to-make. A single slice of bread is so versatile that it can be anything, from a simple sandwich to a poha or even upma. Interesting, right? The easiest way to eat up bread in the morning is to make a sandwich. For those untouched by the phenomenon, a sandwich is a quick snack-like dish made from two slices of bread, stuffed with lots of good fillings. From vegetables to meat, anything and everything can be stuffed into a sandwich. Sandwiches are really easy to make and they make for not only a perfect breakfast, but lunch too. While Indians love their flatbreads like parathas, it is these sandwiches that have also slided onto breakfast tables gradually.

A sandwich is nothing like a toast. Toast refers to a single slice of bread that has been made crispy by toasting it whereas a sandwich involves two slices of bread. Did you know that the sandwich was actually invented in the UK? It was the Earl of Sandwich after whom the name has been given to this snack. It was his cooks who came up with a solution for feeding the Earl while he used to gamble. They prepared, what we call a sandwich today, so that he could eat while enjoying his game. Sandwiches can be made in a variety of ways. They can be raw, toasted, fried or grilled.

But do you know how the sandwich entered India? Well, it is believed that we progressed from Portuguese paos, which were our first tryst with bread, to the first vegetarian hamburger called vada pao. The first time we tried an actual loaf of bread was in the 1960s when the British introduced it to us.

This reminds us, how about a grilled sandwich today? Here are a few recipes that you can try.

1.  Grilled Sausage Sandwich

If you like to indulge in a meaty delight, try this sausage sandwich today. Sausages are cut and sliced to fit into a sandwich with some zucchini and herb mayo on the base. The huge sandwich bread works best in this case.

2.  Grilled Cheddar Cheese Sandwich

What is a sandwich without cheese and something creamy? Layer the cheddar cheese slices onto your bread. Slather it with some chipotle and tomato pasta sauce. When all of this combines together, it gives a perfect taste. Once you’ve grilled your bread, cut it into two halves and the cheese pull will make your heart drool.

3.  Egg Bhurji Grilled Sandwich

Egg bhurji is the desi version of scrambled eggs. Tossed with tomatoes, onions and coriander, the eggs are scrambled together into a thick mixture. This is then carefully slathered onto bread and grilled to perfection. Eat the crunchy and crispy sandwich with a side of tomato ketchup.

4.  Grilled Samosa Sandwich

Samosa, for the unversed, is a crispy, deep-fried conical pastry that is usually eaten for snacks. The samosa is stuffed into a slice of bread and topped with another. The samosa is sandwiched between the two slices along with some mint chutney and tamarind chutney. Grill the sandwich and you are good to go.

5.  Grilled Chicken Sandwich

A classic breakfast treat, the grilled chicken sandwich is a must-try. All you have to do is shred boiled chicken and mix it with some mayonnaise and seasonings and spread it on the bread slice. Grill it all together and enjoy.
