However, not all foods are suitable for this cooking method. While air frying is undoubtedly a versatile and convenient way to prepare meals, there are certain food items that are best avoided when using this appliance. Whether due to their texture, moisture content, or overall composition, these foods may not yield the desired results in an air fryer.

Wet Batters

While air frying is praised for its ability to produce crispy results with minimal oil, wet batters pose a challenge. When submerged in batter, foods like fish, chicken, or vegetables retain moisture, leading to soggy outcomes in the air fryer. The circulating hot air struggles to penetrate the wet coating evenly, resulting in unevenly cooked, mushy textures. Instead, opt for foods with dry coatings or those naturally suited for air frying.

Leafy greens

Due to their high water content and delicate nature, leafy greens like spinach, kale, or lettuce can quickly wilt and become overly dried out when subjected to the intense heat and circulating air of an air fryer. Instead, opt for sautéing or steaming leafy greens to retain their moisture and maximise their nutritional value, ensuring a vibrant and flavourful addition to your meals.

Large Food Item

While air frying is a healthier alternative to traditional frying, certain large food items may not be suitable for this cooking method. Items like whole turkeys, large roasts, or oversized portions of food may not cook evenly or fit properly within the air fryer basket, leading to uneven cooking or insufficient airflow. Additionally, these large items can obstruct the circulation of hot air, resulting in undercooked or overcooked sections.

Cooking In Foil

While cooking in foil is a common method for oven baking or grilling, it's not recommended for air frying due to potential safety hazards and reduced effectiveness. Foil can obstruct airflow in the air fryer, leading to uneven cooking or overheating. Moreover, the foil might tear or puncture the air fryer basket, causing damage or malfunction. Instead, opt for alternatives like parchment paper or silicone mats to ensure proper air circulation and maintain the integrity of your air fryer.

Cheesy Items

Cheese items such as mozzarella sticks, cheese-filled snacks, and soft cheeses like brie or camembert may not yield desirable results in an air fryer. The high heat of the air fryer can cause these cheese items to melt excessively or leak out, resulting in a messy and unevenly cooked outcome. It's advisable to opt for other cooking methods like baking or grilling for these cheese items to maintain their texture and flavour profile.
