Much like the Butterbeer enjoyed by wizards and witches, Glühwein also casts a spell of warmth amidst joyous gatherings, snowflakes, and twinkling holiday lights. At the winter party organised at your home, gather around and enjoy the goblets filled with this hearty brew.

Glühwein is more than just a beverage. It is one of the popular traditions to enjoy Glühwein in the European winter, especially in German-speaking countries. The word “glühen” means glow or heat in Germany; the drink embodies the essence of warmth, comfort, and celebration during the cold months. Mulled wines originated from the practise of adding spices and herbs to wine, initially for medicinal reasons and later to enhance its flavour magically.

Glühwein popularly gained attention during the Middle Ages in Europe. This is a Christmas drink and is widely consumed across Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. This drink fosters a sense of togetherness and celebration in the company of family and friends.

Apart from its delightful taste, Glühwein offers potential health benefits when consumed in moderation. Red wine, a key component of Glühwein, contains antioxidants like resveratrol, which may have heart-protective properties. The spices used in the drink, such as cinnamon and cloves, are also known for their potential health benefits.

Gluhwein Recipe

We have jotted down the recipe for Glühwein here, which you can enjoy this season:

Ingredients:

  • 750 ml red wine (choose a fruity and medium- to full-bodied variety)
  • 1 orange, sliced
  • 8–10 whole cloves
  • 2 cinnamon sticks
  • 1 star anise
  • 1/2 cup (100g) sugar (adjust to taste)
  • 1/4 cup brandy or rum (for an extra kick)
  • Orange zest for garnish

Method:

  • Wash the orange thoroughly and slice it into rounds. If you choose to use orange zest for garnish, make sure to zest the orange before slicing.
  • Pour the red wine into a large pot over medium heat.
  • Add the orange slices, cloves, cinnamon sticks, star anise, and sugar to the pot. If you're adding brandy or rum, include it at this stage.
  • Heat the mixture gently, avoiding boiling. Keep the heat on low to medium-low to allow the flavours to meld without reducing the alcohol content too much.
  • Allow the Glühwein to simmer for at least 15-20 minutes, but you can let it simmer longer for a richer flavour. Stir occasionally.
  • Taste the Glühwein and adjust the sweetness if needed by adding more sugar, stirring well until it dissolves.
  • Once the Glühwein is well-infused and heated through, remove the whole spices (cloves, cinnamon sticks, and star anise) by straining the mixture.
  • Ladle the warm Glühwein into mugs or heat-resistant glasses.
  • If desired, garnish with a twist of orange zest on top of each serving.
