Ready to get started? Here are some easy tips for balcony blueberry gardening!

Pick The Right One

Choosing the right blueberry variety is key to success in your home garden. Highbush blueberries are great for cooler climates, big berries and big plants. Southern highbush varieties are for warmer climates. Research your climate and pick a variety that will do well and you will get the best harvest.

Pick The Right Container

Blueberries grow in containers, so they are perfect for balcony gardening. Choose a big pot or container that is at least 18 inches deep and wide to fit their shallow roots. Make sure the container has good drainage holes to prevent waterlogging. A wider pot allows for better growth and stability and gives your plants room to breathe.

Soil

Blueberries need acidic soil between 4.5 and 5.5 for optimal growth. You can make the perfect soil mix by combining potting soil, peat moss and compost. This will give your plants the nutrients they need and help retain moisture. If your garden soil is not acidic enough you can add elemental sulphur to lower the pH so your blueberries will thrive.

Planting

Now you have your container and soil ready, it is time to plant. Fill the container with the soil mix, leaving about an inch at the top to prevent spillage when watering. Gently remove the blueberry plant from its nursery pot and place it in the centre of the container. Fill in the sides with soil, making sure the root ball is slightly above the soil line to promote root growth.

Watering

Watering consistently is key to growing blueberries. After planting give your plant good water. Blueberries like moist well well-draining soil so check the top inch of soil regularly; if it feels dry it is time to water again. Do not overwater as blueberries do not like soggy soil. Establish a regular watering routine and your plants will be healthy and productive.

Sunlight

Sunlight is essential for blueberries to grow and produce fruit. Place your container in a spot that gets at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight a day. Full sun will encourage healthy growth and maximum fruiting. If your balcony does not get enough sun move the plants to a sunnier spot so they can get the light they need.

Fertilising

To promote growth fertilise your blueberry plants with an acid-based fertiliser for blueberries or azaleas. Fertilise in early spring and again in mid-summer to provide nutrients during critical growth periods. Follow the instructions on the fertiliser package for the right amount to use. Fertilising supports fruiting and overall plant health.

Pruning

Pruning is key to a healthy blueberry plant. In the first 2 years focus on removing any dead or weak branches to encourage strong growth. Once your plant is established prune annually to shape and promote fruiting. Pruning helps the plant stay healthy and also improves air circulation reducing the risk of disease.

Harvesting

Blueberries ripen in summer so it is time to harvest. Look for deep blue berries that are slightly soft to the touch, that is when they are ready to pick. Gently twist the berry to remove it from the stem without damaging the plant. Regular harvesting will encourage more fruiting so you can enjoy an abundance of fresh blueberries from your garden.

Winter Care

Winter care is crucial for potted blueberries. If you live in an area that freezes consider moving your pots to a sheltered area like a garage or basement. Or you can wrap the pots in burlap or straw to protect the roots from extreme cold. Winter care will keep your blueberries healthy and ready to go when spring arrives.
