Sometimes we crave things that have veggies, chicken, and masala, and not every time we get to sate our cravings. But there is one thing that is not only pocket friendly but also could be found easily on any Indian city street. I hope you have guessed what we are talking about. Yes, it’s Frankie. Frankie is flatbread often coated in egg and fried until golden. With a stuffing of veggies or chicken or mutton having a zing of spices like cumin ground coriander, ginger, mango powder, and chaat masala, Frankie is an ultimate destination for foodies.

Let us take a minute to appreciate the inventor of Frankie i.e. Amarjeet Singh Tibb. This story began in 1967 when National-level Hockey player and Pharmacist Amarjeet Singh Tibb was in Beirut. He tasted a Lebanese Pita roll there and immediately decided to create one as per Bombay’s taste. It took him two years to transform his idea into reality. With proper coordination and execution of his wife Surinder Kaur, they opened Tibb’s Frankie in the year 1969 in Mumbai then Bombay. Their first creation was a Mutton Frankie and it was a total hit, especially among the Parsis. Since all these years, Amarjeet Singh Tibb’s son Charanjit and Jasmit have created an empire. Starting from Mumbai, Tibb’s Frankie has 260 plus outlets worldwide and they are onto opening more outlets in the coming years.

But have you wondered how Frankie got its name ‘Frankie’? We are here for your rescue. West Indian Cricketer Sir Frank Worrell was a legend those days. In one of the India-West India matches, Worrell hit a six. Tibbs heard someone’s remark ‘What a shot, Frankie’. This was then he decided to give the name ‘Frankie’ to his Indianized Lebanese Pita Roll. Thanks for the shot, Frankie!

One can make Frankie with or without veggies and with or without chicken or mutton. You can even add spices as per your choice and can have as many variations as you want.
