Don’t let Bollywood films deceive you. Fasting for Karwa Chauth could be a daunting affair, especially if it is your first time, and you do not have someone to help you with your Sargi. Karwa Chauth is an Hindu festival, where many Hindi married women observe a day-long fast without drinking any water or consuming any food, until the moonrise. Upon waking up on the day of Karwa Chauth which falls on 13th October this year, women consume a wholesome assortment of foods called Sargi. In Punjab, sargi is a significant part of this pre-dawn meal and always includes fenia. The Sargi is prepared or given to the fasting woman by her mother-in-law. Here are some simple ideas with which you can start your day on a fulfilling and nutritious note.

Sweet Potato Kheer

Is any Indian festival quite as complete without a bowl of kheer? We don’t think so. And in Karwa Chauth it makes complete sense, it is sweet and thus perfect to keep you going through the day, sweet potatoes add a touch of healthy carbs. Just beat it into pulp, cook it with milk, sugar, ghee and cardamom and you are good to go.

Atte Ka Halwa

Did you know Halwa actually has Turkish roots, it came to India in the medieval era and became  a mainstay. We have, since then adapted the dessert and given it many desi spins. One of our favourite Halwas would have to be the Atte ka halwa. No fuss, no frills, just simple flavours that spell homely comfort. Just roast some atta or wheat flour, with little bit of ghee, nuts, and aromatic spices and you are good.

Paneer Pakora

While yes, we all have a sweet tooth but loading up only on kheers and mithais can be a bit too much. Some savoury Paneer pakodas are a perfect addition to your Sargi.  Slice up some paneer, dunk them in spicy bean batter, fry them in hot oil and munch away.

Besan Cheela

If you must make your morning meal fortifying enough to last you a day then do it properly. This crepe made with thin gram flour batter, spices and chillies, is easy, high-protein and energy-inducing. And most importantly, it is so easy to make.

Curd Rice

Simple, flavourful curd rice is gut-friendly and full of good carbs for an energetic meal? Sounds like a good idea to us.
