Mustard as a spice and as an ingredient with immense medicinal uses has been in use since centuries. The first civilization to use mustard seeds in these ways was the Egyptian one. They found put about the benefits of eating mustard and adding it to the diet and did not stop since then. Centuries later, the French people started using mustard after being exposed to its benefits by the Romans. This was followed by the spread of popularity of mustard all over the Europe, with France giving the world the very famous dijon mustard.
As with everything in the industrial revolution era, the British became the first mustard millers in the world, giving rise to the yellow mustard that we see today. It became all the more popular due to the use of mustard sauce in the famous American fast food, hot dog in the early 20th century. Now, mustard sauce is used all round the world, with people loving its strong, typical taste. In India too, mustard has been an important ingredient and has been a part of our kitchen in the form of oil, seeds, powder and kasundi.
While we have talked so much about mustard, let us look at a simple recipe to make mustard sauce at home.
Ingredients
- 2 Tbsp yellow mustard seeds
- 2 Tbsp black mustard seeds
- 1/5 tsp cinnamon – broken
- 1 Tbsp honey
- Salt, as required
- Vinegar
Method
- Put the yellow mustard, black mustard, honey, cinnamon and salt in a glass or a stainless-steel vessel.
- Cover everything with vinegar. See that the vinegar comes up about 1/2" above the mixture.
- Leave it for the next 48 hours. Remember to not cover the mixture.
- After the stipulated time period, blend the mixture.
Store your mustard sauce in an air-tight container. Enjoy with salads and snacks.
