In an episode of LADbible's Snack Wars, two Hollywood stars, Dev Patel and Jordan Peele, embarked on a taste-testing adventure pitting Indian foods against American ones. With the director and producer having different tastes, they got to try a plethora of snacks, from American pickle-in-a-pouch to Indian poppadoms with chutney, and from American beef jerky to Indian chicken dosa. With Patel and Peele's charismatic banter and reaction shots, it was an entertaining, genuine comparison of delights. The legendary Indian rum, Old Monk, shined without a doubt as both stars were won over by its rich, complex flavours.
Taste Test Begins
Patel and Peele started off with a real American classic: the Old Fashioned cocktail. They sipped it gingerly and proclaimed it sweet—a surefire way to get a pretty bad hangover. Patel shared the fun fact that Wes Anderson is exceptionally good at making this cocktail, really adding a touch of Hollywood trivia to the tasting session. That said, while that Old Fashioned was nice in its own right, what really stole the show was the turn of Indian Old Monk rum.
Old Monk Rum Charms Hollywood's Best
The anticipation, as Patel poured out the amber elixir of Old Monk—a staple in Indian drinking culture, was palpable. Jordan Peele reacted almost instantaneously and positively. Dev proclaimed his love for Old Monk, waxing lyrical about its rich flavours that ranged from caramel to toffee—all with a hint of nail varnish that gives it a whimsy. Dev Patel commented and revealed how the depth and character of the rum set it apart. With something bordering on a resounding endorsement, Peele stamped Old Monk with his approval, proclaiming it right out as the clear winner.
The Allure of Old Monk
Old Monk is an iconic Indian dark rum that has been the consistent drink of choice for decades. Known for its smooth, rich flavour profile, it has a combination of caramel, vanilla, and a hint of spices, subtly embedded, that make this a versatile drink enjoyed neat, on the rocks, or as a part of many cocktails.
It is distinct in character and very affordable, thus earning itself a following, not only in India but also with rum enthusiasts worldwide. It is this nostalgia and brackish flavour that has sealed the status of Old Monk as a cultural icon, whether it be an Indian home or a social function.
Other Comparisons
The adventure in tasting then went on to Indian chicken dosa versus American beef jerky. While Peele was not that impressed with the beef jerky, Dev Patel let his love for Indian cuisine shine right through as he relished the chicken dosa.
Another comparison featured American pickle-in-a-pouch against Indian poppadoms with chutney. The tangy and crunchy poppadoms, paired with the vibrant chutney, offered a sensory delight that contrasted sharply with the more subdued American pickle.
