According to many reports, the cases of dengue and chikungunya are already on the rise in India. Both ailments are caused when the mosquito bites which breed in stagnant water that accumulates in potholes, flower pots, and vacant spaces around residential areas.

Fever and joint pain are the most common symptoms when a person is either suffering from dengue or chikungunya. If the condition worsens, the platelet count can decrease significantly and pose a threat to life.

Therefore, Slurrp connected with Dr Sangeeta Tiwari, Clinical Nutritionist, Artemis Lite, NFC, New Delhi, to bring you a list of food items that can help you recover from either of these ailments and build immunity.

Why Do Platelets Decrease In Dengue Fever & Chikungunya?

Sharing the light on how the platelet count decreases during dengue fever and chikungunya, Dr Sangeeta Tiwari said, “It is mainly due to the viruses' impact on the body's ability to produce platelets and the increased destruction of platelets. The dengue and chikungunya viruses infect and damage bone marrow, where platelets are produced. This hampers the production of new platelets. Furthermore, the immune system's response to the infection can lead to increased destruction of platelets.”

The body produces antibodies to fight the viral infection but these can target platelets as well and destroy them. The expert also added that the viruses can cause an increase in vascular permeability (capacity of blood vessels to allow the flow of small molecules) which can contribute to plasma leakage and even bleeding. This also contributes to the decrease of platelets in the blood.

What Foods Increase Platelet Count Faster In Blood?

Apart from medicines given to the patient, their diet also plays a crucial role in increasing the platelets in the blood. Whether you are suffering or recovering from dengue fever or chikungunya, here is a list of foods shared by Dr Sangeeta Tiwari that you must consume.

Beetroot

Beetroot is known for many health benefits but the most important is it increases the haemoglobin count. Thus, it can support platelet production. You can include it in your diet via soup, stew, juice, paratha, or salad.

Papaya Leaf Extract

According to the expert, if you consume papaya leaf extract, it can significantly increase the platelet count. You can drink papaya leaf juice or include it in your diet in some way or other to extract maximum benefits.

Pumpkin

Next on the list is pumpkin which contains vitamin A. It supports healthy platelet production and is an excellent ingredient to experiment with. From savouries to sweets, you can make a variety of dishes using pumpkin (make sure not to overdo it with oil, sugar, and salt) and give your taste buds a treat amid a strict schedule of medicines.

Aloe Vera Juice

The expert recommended that drinking aloe vera juice can also boost platelet count in the blood. You can extract aloe vera if you have the plant at home and prepare a glass of juice with other ingredients that can help you recover from the mosquito bite.

Pomegranate

Pomegranates are rich in antioxidants and iron which can also boost the production of platelets in the body. You can consume pomegranate as is or extract the juice. You can also add it to garnish salads and enjoy its fruity taste.

Oranges

Dr Sangeeta Tiwari added, “Oranges are rich in vitamin C, which enhances iron absorption and supports platelet function.” Eat the fruit, extract the juice, or use it to make a delicious dessert with low or no sugar, its consumption can be helpful in the recovery phase.

Milk

Since milk is high in calcium, it supports the formation of platelets in the body. Therefore, milk or milk-based products like paneer, cheese, and more can be consumed. But first, consult with your doctor to verify what kind of products will help you recover.

Spinach

Spinach is not only good for making delicious dishes like palak paneer, paneer paratha, or smoothie. It is a rich source of vitamin K which is essential for blood clotting and platelet count. Consume it in whichever way possible to recover and build immunity.

Foods That Patients Of Dengue Fever And Chikungunya Should Avoid

While there are foods that can help to increase the platelet count, promote recovery, and boost immunity, certain drinks, medicines, and consumables can impact your health adversely. Dr Sangeeta Tiwari shared a list of those to alert recovering patients.

Alcohol

When you are struggling to get a viral infection under control, your immune system is directed towards fighting it. Not just your body, but your organs also become weak. In such a scenario, if you consume alcohol, it can further decrease the platelet count and impair the immune system.

Aspirin & NSAIDS

According to the expert, consuming aspirin or NSAIDS without the recommendation of a physician can be dangerous to your health. It can increase the risks of bleeding by inhibiting platelet function.

Sugary Foods

While the doctor recommends fruits and dairy products, you must avoid excess sugar in juices and smoothies. The best idea is to prepare juice or smoothie at home and consume natural sugar. Excess of sugar in foods and beverages can lead to inflammation and impair the response of the immune system.

Processed Foods

Dr Sangeeta Tiwari also prescribed staying clear of processed foods. She added, “They can contain chemicals and preservatives that can weaken the immune system and affect the platelet count.”

This short guide can help you devise a diet for you or your loved one recovering from dengue fever or chikungunya. Along with this, keep your surroundings clean so that mosquitoes cannot breed.
