There’s just something so comforting about a meal that requires only a smear of spread on a piece of bread or bagel or even roti. Spreads are so unique, ad most things that can be spread thin come under this category. But here are some common spreads with definite characteristics, they can be either dairy or fruit or even meat-based. Getting a good understanding of spreads will allow you to make your own delicacies. You can also mix and match your spreads to make some really fun flavours, like jelly and peanut butter is a wonderful combination. Here are four types of spreads you should know about:

Dairy Spreads
These are your classic spreads like butter, cream cheese, herbed butter, and other types of butter. Most dairy spreads have a tarty flavour with a creamy texture. They go great with all other types of spreads because of their mild flavours. Clotted cream and maple butter are sub-varieties of dairy spreads.

Sweet Spreads
This category is very broad and includes any and all spreads that are sweet irrespective of their base ingredients and degree of processing. It included spreads like honey, marmalade, and margarine. They pair great with dairy spreads.

Yeast Spreads
The category encompasses spreads like marmite and vegemite which are processed yeast and yeast by-products. They are loaded with healthy nutrients and antioxidants and the production resembles the process of beer (which also uses yeast as an ingredient). Sweet spreads like honey are often smeared along with yeast spreads.

Meat Spreads
While these meat-based spreads sound strange, they are a beloved product in many parts of the world. Pate is an example of a meat-based spread. It is a paste made from ground meat like pork, poultry, and even fish. They don’t pair well with other kinds of spreads because they tend to have very strong flavours.
