It is generally believed that the drink was named after the former Chilean President, Pedro Montt who was nicknamed El Mono Montt, or Monkey Montt. During an evening party, as soon as Montt was about to leave the party, he was convinced to stay a little longer and continue on with the festivities. At that party, after the wine was over, guests were still thirty for something more. This situation led to the creation of the drink by mixing milk, coffee, aguardiente, and sugar together into a glass. Within no time, the drink gained popularity and was dubbed ‘Colt de Mont’, eventually morphing into ‘Cola de Mono’ And later ‘Colemono'. Another theory suggests that since the drink is homemade, it was originally bottled with labels from the company, Anís del Mono. This could have also led to the creation of this drink.
