Come February and many people gear up to celebrate Valentine's Day. It’s that time of the year when lovebirds walk the extra mile to make each other feel special. If you dig into the past, you’ll know that this special day is celebrated in honour of Saint Valentine, a Catholic priest who lived in Rome in the 3rd Century.
According to popular legends, St Valentine played a crucial role in uniting many lovers during his time. In fact, he also secretly officiated wedding ceremonies of many Roman soldiers. It was the time when many Roman men were taking to Christianity, which was seen as a crime by Roman Emperor Claudius II. When the king found out that St Valentine was carrying out these secret Christian ceremonies, he was imprisoned. But even in the prison, he won the affection of all the prisoners with his kindness, particularly that of the jailer's blind daughter, whom he supposedly cured. St Valentine was executed on February 14, around the year 270 AD.
