Although the precise origins of falafel are uncertain, there are a lot of widely accepted ideas. The majority of these theories concur that falafel originated in Egypt. The issue of when and by whom, however, is somewhat disputed. Some claim that it originated with the Egyptian Copts, who imported it from the Middle East, some 1,000 years ago. Some claim that falafel originated in India in the sixth century.

One of the more widely recognised hypotheses dates the creation of falafel to a later period, the late 19th century. As soon as the British took over Egypt in 1882, this is roughly the period the dish first appeared in Egyptian literature. According to one idea, when British commanders visited India, they relished fried vegetable croquettes and requested their Egyptian cooks to make a variant using local ingredients.

Here’s the recipe for Chicken Falafel.

Ingredients: 

  • 400 gms of drained canned chickpeas 
  • 500 gms of lean chicken ground (chicken mince)
  • 2 tbsps of tomato chutney or 2 tsps of mango chutney
  • 1 egg (gently beaten)
  • 3 tbsps of flour
  • 2 spring onions (chopped finely)
  • 2 tbsps of curry powder
  • Seasoning with salt and pepper to taste

Method

  • The chickpeas should be chopped up very finely using a food processor.
  • Mix in the chicken, spring onions, curry powder, chutney and salt and pepper to taste.
  • Using a 1/3 cup measure, shape the mixture into patties.
  • The patties should be cooked for approximately 4 mins on each side on a lightly oiled grill plate.
