Kada Prasad holds deep significance in Sikh culture and is an integral part of the Sikh religious experience. This sacred offering is a type of sweet, halwa-like pudding made from simple ingredients like atta, pure ghee sugar, and water. The preparation process involves cooking the ingredients in a way that reflects the importance of devotion, humility, and community in Sikhism. Kada Prasad is offered and distributed in Gurdwaras as a symbol of unity and equality, regardless of one's social or economic status.

But it’s more than a temple offering or culinary experience but a spiritual one, where Sikhs receive it with reverence and gratitude, considering it as a divine blessing from Guru Nanak. By making it the first video in her new studio kitchen, Chef Raichand has definitely started off her new beginning with the best of intentions.

Make your own kada prasad with this recipe:

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup whole wheat flour
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 cup ghee
  • 3 cups water
  • A pinch of cardamom powder (optional)

Method:

  • Measure out the whole wheat flour, sugar, ghee, and water.
  • If using whole cardamom pods, remove the seeds and crush them to make cardamom powder.
  • Heat a heavy-bottomed pan or kadai on medium-low heat.
  • Add the whole wheat flour to the pan and start roasting it. Continuously stir the flour to prevent it from burning and to achieve an even color.
  • Roast the flour until it turns golden brown and releases a nutty aroma. This step might take around 15-20 minutes. Patience is key here to avoid burning the flour.
  • In a separate pot, bring 3 cups of water to a boil.
  • Add the sugar to the boiling water and stir until it dissolves completely. This will create a sugar syrup.
  • Once the flour is roasted and the sugar syrup is ready, carefully pour the sugar syrup into the roasted flour while stirring continuously. Be cautious as the mixture might splutter.
  • Keep stirring to avoid lumps from forming. The mixture will thicken quickly.
  • Gradually add the ghee to the mixture, stirring constantly. The mixture will absorb the ghee and become glossy.
  • If using cardamom powder, add it at this stage and mix well to infuse the flavor.
  • Continue to cook the mixture on low heat for a few more minutes until it thickens to a halwa-like consistency. It should easily come together and leave the sides of the pan.
