The rituals and practices during this fasting period are similar to those observed during the Shardiya Navratri, which falls between September and October. During this time, several food-related restrictions are followed, wherein certain ingredients are permitted while others are not. And non-vegetarian food is a strict "no," along with onions and garlic in meals. So, for instance, an aloo paratha can be eaten without the addition of onions. Even the salt added to foods has to be rock salt. Wheat flour is also not consumed during this time, and alternatives like kuttu atta are used. To begin your fasting, start with some vrat-friendly breakfast ideas.

Here are some vrat-friendly breakfast recipes that you cannot miss this Navratri:

1. Kuttu Ka Chilla

Chilla is a desi-style pancake made with kuttu atta. Kuttu, aka buckwheat flour, is used for making this chilla. Minimum spices are added to the batter, along with cumin powder and curd, carrots, green chillies and coriander leaves. Serve with a mint-based chutney.

These two vrat-friendly delights are paired with almond milk and mixed with chopped fruits. Relish the natural sweetness of this heavenly porridge bowl.

4.     Samak Dosa

Samak, also known as barnyard millet, is the vrat-friendly flour that is used for making dosa. The dosa batter is prepared with samak chawal ka atta, or barnyard millet flour, along with diced potatoes, cumin seeds, haldi, red chilli powder, salt, and lemon juice. The samak dosa is crispy and crunchy and super healthy. Potatoes are tossed in masala and stuffed inside the dosa.

5.     Mooli Thepla

Instead of a mooli paratha, make a delicious mooli thepla today. Thepla, for the uninitiated, is a Gujarati-style flatbread that is made with wheat flour and besan.
