You've probably had Lassi and Chaas, two delightful beverages if you're from India. These beverages are widely available throughout India, particularly in North India. Both summer drinks are produced using butter, but apart from that, there is no taste or quality similarity between them. Many people, however, make the mistake of confusing Chaas and Lassi.

What’s Lassi?

Punjab's Most Celebrated Drink: Lassi is a traditional Punjabi drink. This dish originated in Punjab and has since grown in popularity in India and overseas. When compared to Chaas or buttermilk, Lassi is much thicker. Lassi is produced by churning curd and adding toppings like mango, kesar, or rose syrup. In addition, a lot of nuts are added to lassi to enhance the flavour of this sweet beverage. As seen in movies, Lassi is traditionally served in tall glasses and goes well with Aloo Paratha, Chole Bhature, and other Indian cuisines. You can even drink a glass of chilled lassi during the summer to stay hydrated throughout the day.

 What is Chaas or Buttermilk?

Buttermilk, also known as Chaas, is a popular drink in Gujarat and Rajasthan. Gujarat is claimed to be the birthplace of this delicious beverage. This drink is also trendy among people, much like Lassi, and is extensively consumed throughout the summer months. This drink is created in the same way as lassi, except a lot of water is added to the yoghurt. Butterfat is also eliminated here, resulting in a thinner consistency. Salt, roasted jeera (cumin seeds), or pepper can be added to buttermilk or chaas to enhance the flavour.

What Makes Lassi and Chaas Different?

1. Lassi is created by blending yoghurt with water and adding sugar or salt to taste. Buttermilk is made by churning off the butter from milk.

2. Lassi comes in various tastes (including mango, strawberry, and peppermint), but buttermilk is usually unflavored.

3. Buttermilk has a thinner consistency than lassi because it includes more water.

4. Lassi is milder than buttermilk. Pepper, cumin, green chillies, and coriander are among the spices used in chaas.

5. For folks trying to lose weight, buttermilk is a superior choice. Buttermilk is of less-calorie since the butterfat has been removed and extra water has been added. On the other hand, lassi contains fat, even if it is made with low-fat milk.

Now you have the key differences between two popular Indian drinks.
