How can you not look at the weather and feel like snuggling up with a hot bowl of soup or a cup of hot chocolate? While winter is on its last leg, we are feeling a bit too greedy to part ways with all those delicious things that made it tad more bearable. This winter, we saw ourselves instinctively drawn to simpler preparations, and we were also fairly bold to give simple, classic preparations our own twist. The weather wasn’t so kind to us to experiment and cook up a storm as often, so there we were, adding chocolate to our gajar ka halwa, or a little bit of booze to our hot chocolate.
That’s right, spiked hot chocolate is actually not a novel drink. People have been adding all sorts of liquor to their hot chocolate since time immemorial, from rum, brandy to bourbon. If we trace the history of Hot chocolate, the beverage was known to be a favourite among Mayans, close to 2500 years ago. On cold chilli nights, the Mayans would mix chocolate with water, cornmeal and chili pepper to make the drink. In the next thousand years, humble hot chocolate became a widely known phenomenon across Spain and the Aztec community. It didn’t take much time for the drink to become a pan-European sensation, and spiked hot chocolate also became one of the many, winter drinks the Europeans could swear by when the weather would get really rough. The combination of liquor and hot chocolate wasn’t just boozy but also immensely flavourful
