Ever since the viral ‘idli on stick’ trend has taken over the internet, we can’t help but marvel at the sheer versatility of the South Indian snack. For the unversed, Industrialist Harsh Goenka shared an image of Idli popsicles on his Twitter that divided the internet into two clans. While some found it convenient, some were just aghast. Even politician and author Shashi Tharoor couldn’t help but call it 'absurd'. Idli popsicle is nothing but Idli steamed with an Ice cream stick, the reasonably simple snack is all the rage now, but what are we tell you that we have got something even simpler? 

That’s right. If you have the batter in place, making idli is perhaps the easiest thing you can do in the morning, which is probably why it is such a unique breakfast item even outside of South India. But making the batter is a tricky affair for many. From the amount of rice you add to the consistency of the batter to the time you allow it to ferment, all these components require time, patience and precision. So, should you resort to your regular ‘bread and jam’ business? Not at all. You would be surprised to know that you can prepare instant idlis using the same loaf of bread.

What Would You Need To Do? 

This is a very simple recipe, and all you need to make this recipe are bread crumbs, rava or semolina, sour curd, water and baking soda. That’s it. All of five ingredients and a total of 30 minutes, and you can treat yourself with instant bread idli right each time the cravings hit. 

You can use any bread of your choice, white, brown or multigrain. Tear them into small pieces. Please put them in a mixer and blend them into a fine powder and your bread crumbs are ready. Collect them in a bowl, and you will need them later. 

After this, you would have to dry roast the rava and let it cool down. Then, mix it with bread crumbs, curd, salt, and mix well. 

Now comes a slightly complicated part. Add water to make a thick batter. It shouldn’t be too thick and tight and not too watery. Make sure you add baking soda right towards the end. Mix everything well and let it rest for 5 to 10 minutes. That’s right, not overnight, but only 10 minutes; the curd you have used in the batter will accelerate the fermentation process. 

Grease the idli moulds, pour the batter and steam for about 10 minutes. Once cooked, prick it with a toothpick to check if it is cooked from inside. Serve hot with any chutney, dip of your choice. You can also pair the idlis with Sambhar.
