While speaking at the Startup Mahakumbh event in New Delhi, Deepinder Goyal – the CEO of Zomato, talked about how their quick commerce platform – Blinkit, is all set to outperform the business of the food delivery app. In a discussion with the Co-Founder of Info Edge, Sanjeev Bhikhchandani, Goyal predicted that the platform, which is focussed on grocery delivery will outgrow the parent company’s business within a year’s time – all thanks to the new ‘disruptive’ plan that is currently under development.

During the course of the discussion, he mentioned that Blinkit was a service that was added to the 4.0 version of the delivery app, which might evolve again with a small team in place whose funds will be used to ‘disrupt the businesses’ they are in at the moment. Pointing out the evolution of the delivery app itself from when it was first started in 2008, Goyal elaborated on how the business done by the company now is starkly different compared to when it was introduced to the market.

With technological progress and distribution systems changing every few years, he was also quick to observe that any plan put in motion to grow the business will be valid for a decade, at best; and that innovation was the only way to keep up with the changing face of consumerism. On the other hand, the CEO of Blinkit stated during an interaction with the media that although quick commerce was a concept that emerged in 2015, back-end operational challenges didn’t allow for the concept to thrive at the time. However, with the onset of the pandemic, the opportunity for faster deliveries expanded with an efficient supply chain.

Goyal also noted that the new avatar of these e-commerce platforms could lead to a fifth version of Zomato and a 2.0 for Blinkit. He also emphasised on the importance of inculcating good company culture, and that the challenges faced during the course of expansion made the team stronger than ever to deal with the changing face of commerce in the age of tech innovations.
