Ancient Rome is the birthplace of the burger created in the 1st century AD when it was savoured as minced meat between two buns consisting of pine nuts, pepper, and flavourings of wine and garum. In 1885, a concoction of a squashed beef meatball between slices of bread, came to be popularly known as the first hamburger. The name ‘Hamburger’ came from the fortress ‘Hammaburg’ in Hamburg, Germany.  A burger is not called a sandwich because of the type of bread used. A sandwich includes two slices of bread and on the contrary, hamburger patties are placed within a roll that’s been cut into half.
