Nihonshu

Sake, also referred to as nihonshu, is a traditional rice wine from Japan that has deep cultural meaning. More importantly, sake, according to a lot of people, is a delicate art form which demonstrates Japanese culture's commitment to craftsmanship. This is a fermented rice beverage made from polished rice, water, yeast and koji mould. Sake is available with diverse tastes, smells, and alcohol concentrations, from sweet to dry. Depending on the variety and individual preference, it can be consumed either warm or cold. Sake, which is usually served in little porcelain cups, goes well with grilled fish, sashimi, or light appetisers.

Umeshu

Ume fruits, which are sometimes mistaken for plums, are used to make umeshu, or Japanese plum wine, a sweet and cool beverage. Enjoyed as a dessert wine or as an aperitif, this pleasant beverage is essential in Japanese homes. Umeshu is made in a rather simple way: ume fruits are soaked in a mixture of sugar and shochu, a Japanese alcohol so that the flavours can gradually blend and develop. The sweet-tart essence of ume is captured by this slow infusion, producing a flavourful and aromatic beverage. Hence, umeshu enhances the craving for sweet foods after having some savoury foods during festive occasions.  However, umeshu goes well in every function that accompanies the winter season and is also well taken neat or in cocktails.
