During monsoon season in India, one of the most recurrent and pressing issues that foodies and home cooks face is that of odour. Because there is too much moisture and dampness around, and because most people close doors and windows to keep the rain out, there is usually a musty smell that pervades our kitchens. Add to that the fumes, smell and heat that is normal in a kitchen and the smell issue actually becomes worse during monsoon.

So, keeping a home kitchen smell-free and clean during the monsoon season can be a challenge due to increased humidity and potential for dampness. And yet, this is something we all must pay attention towards because it is not just a hygiene issue but also a food and health one.

A smelly kitchen can become an easy breeding ground for fungus, mold and bacteria, all of which can impact your food. By causing foodborne and waterborne diseases, these can also impact your health adversely, especially during a season when the immune system bears too many onslaughts anyways. So, how can you possibly create a smell-free and clean kitchen environment this monsoon? Here are a few tips that will absolutely help.

Proper Ventilation

Ensure good air circulation by opening windows and using exhaust fans or range hoods while cooking. This will help eliminate moisture and prevent lingering odors. While you may not be able to do it throughout the day, especially while it is raining torrentially, make the effort to keep windows open when it is not.

Keep Countertops Dry

Wipe down your countertops frequently to prevent the accumulation of moisture. Use a clean, absorbent cloth or paper towels to soak up any spills or condensation. Make sure the wet cleaning cloths are cleaned and dried properly to avoid them from becoming microbial hotbeds.

Regular Cleaning

Regularly clean your kitchen appliances, cabinets, and shelves to prevent the growth of mold and mildew. Use mild cleaning agents or natural solutions like vinegar and water to remove dirt and grease.

Dispose Of Waste Promptly

All kinds of food waste rots much faster during monsoon and can become sources of bad odours. Dispose of kitchen waste, such as food scraps and trash, on a daily basis. Use sealed bins or bags to prevent odors and attract pests. Consider composting organic waste to reduce overall trash.

Clean And Maintain Your Refrigerator

If your key food storage area is dirty, it will inevitably become the source of bad smell. Regularly clean the interior of your refrigerator and check for any spoiled or expired food items. Keep an open box of baking soda inside to absorb any unwanted odors.

Store Food Properly

Keep perishable foods in airtight containers to prevent moisture and odor absorption. Store spices, grains, and pulses in dry and moisture-free containers. Avoid leaving uncovered food out for extended periods.

Use Natural Deodorizers

Place bowls of baking soda, vinegar, or activated charcoal in strategic locations in your kitchen to absorb odors. You can also use natural air fresheners like lemon peels, citrus sprays, or fresh herbs to add a pleasant scent.

Control Moisture And Humidity Levels

Monsoon season often brings increased humidity, which can lead to dampness and mold growth. To control moisture levels in your kitchen, use dehumidifiers or moisture absorbers. Additionally, ensure there are no leakages in pipes or faucets and fix them promptly if any are found. Wipe down any moisture-prone areas, such as windowsills or under the sink, regularly to prevent mold or mildew formation.
