When a couple of kids barged into my neighbour's house screaming ‘Trick or Treat’, the 60-year-old Ms. Sarin was baffled. These are kids who are usually on the best of their behaviour, why would they suddenly pull such a ‘prank’, and secondly, why did they have kajal smeared all over their face in the most ghoulish fashion. Utterly confused, she smiled at them and gave them a few cashews along with a bar of Cadbury chocolate, and said “Happy Diwali”. The next day when I heard about the incident, I couldn’t help but laugh. This cannot be passed off as a mere episode of ‘generation-gap’. We love festivals, and when they don’t belong to us, we don’t mind adapting them to our ways.

31st October is celebrated as Halloween in many parts of the western world. Thanks to pop culture, a lot of urban Indians have learned a fair amount about the holiday. For instance, it is celebrated to remember the dead and the departed, the saints (Hallows), and martyrs on the eve of All Hallows Day (1 November). On this day, people don their spookiest outfits and kids run around house-to-house in search of candies. Another cool feature about the festival is making delicacies that could scare the daylights out of you. Carved pumpkins, spider cupcakes, boogie man cookies, you name it. Most of these delicacies are not even that time-taking if you think about it, and they look so pretty on your Instagram.
