Food is one thing that unites people from across the world. If a part of India loves to gorge on piping-hot parathas, Italians take pride in their pasta. However, Indians love to gorge on pasta as much as parathas! But there are some food items that are exclusive to a country (or region) and some that are surprisingly banned in some countries. Yes, you read that right. Did you know that the list includes ketchup, ghee, and samosas too? Aren't you taken aback?
Here are 5 food items that are widely consumed in India but are banned in several other countries. Take a look.
1. Samosa
It is one of the most popular snacks in India. Evenings with chai demand piping-hot samosas to munch on. But the South African region of Somalia has prohibited this yummy delicacy since 2011. It's shocking, isn’t it? That's not all. According to the country's law, breaking it can lead to severe punishment too! Wondering why? They say the triangular shape of the snack seems to be a symbol of Christianity that offends the Islamist "Al-Shabaab group."
2. Chewing Gum
Singapore restricted the use, distribution, and trade of all kinds of chewing gums in 1992 due to its strict rules for cleanliness. However, in 2004, due to international pressure, the country allowed the consumption of therapeutic dental chewing gum.
3. Ketchup
Tomato ketchup lends flavour to a host of savoury dishes like samosas, pakodas, noodles, and sandwiches. But if you are in France, it may lead you to trouble. The country has banned tomato ketchup after the French government noticed excess consumption among teenagers.
4. Chawanprash
The magic potion of Chawanprash has been a part of Indian life for ages. It is said to be loaded with healthy nutrients that nourish us from within. But Canada government banned this desi nuskha in 2005, citing high levels of lead and mercury content in the product.
5. Ghee
Ghee is widely used in India for everything from cooking to medicinal purposes. In India, it is considered a superfood that includes essential nutrients required by the body. But did you know that the United States banned the product because the Food and Drug Administration there found that ghee may cause diseases such as high blood pressure, heart attacks, and even obesity?
