Plastic containers have become an easy way to store food in this modern era. However, when you store some cooked dishes, the oil in them can stain the plastic, which is unpleasant. These are not just normal stains, as the residual or minimum amount of oil is always stuck in the container.  Usually, the food-graded plastics used for food storage are highly durable and of good quality, but in the long run, such stains and food residuals can be harmful.

The nature of oil makes it cling to plastic surfaces, seeping into the material and creating visible stains that are not easily washed away with regular soap and water. These stains not only mark the appearance of plastic items but can also become breeding grounds for bacteria if not properly cleaned.

Baking Soda Paste

Baking soda paste is highly effective for removing oil stains from plastic surfaces. When mixed with water to form a paste, baking soda's mild abrasiveness helps lift and absorb the oil without scratching the plastic. Apply the paste to the stained area, let it sit for a few minutes to break down the grease, then gently scrub with a soft cloth or sponge. Rinse thoroughly with warm water. This simple yet powerful method restores the plastic's clean appearance, making it an excellent household solution for tough oil stains.

Soaking In Vinegar

Vinegar, being a natural acid, breaks down the oil, loosening its grip on the plastic surface. To use this method, immerse the stained plastic item in white vinegar for about 15-30 minutes. The acidic properties of vinegar work to dissolve the oil, making it easier to wash away. After soaking, scrub gently with a sponge and rinse thoroughly. This eco-friendly solution not only removes the stain but also eliminates any lingering odours.

Soaking In Soapy Warm Water

The warm water helps to loosen the oil's grip on the surface, while the soap breaks down its molecular structure, making it easier to wash away. This method is particularly useful for items like plastic containers or utensils that come into direct contact with oils or greasy substances. By allowing the plastic to soak for a sufficient time, the stubborn oil stains dissolve, leaving the plastic clean and ready for reuse without the need for harsh chemicals or scrubbing.

Toothpaste

Toothpaste can be surprisingly effective in removing oil stains from plastic surfaces. Its abrasive nature helps to gently scrub away stubborn residues without damaging the plastic. Apply a small amount directly onto the stained area, then use a soft brush or cloth to work it in circular motions. The mild abrasiveness of toothpaste helps lift the oil while its cleaning agents break down the grease. Rinse thoroughly with water afterwards. This method is particularly useful for small stains on items like plastic containers or kitchenware.

Lemon And Sunlight

The citric acid in lemon acts as a natural degreaser, breaking down oils effectively. When exposed to sunlight, the combination enhances the stain-lifting process. The UV rays help to bleach and further break down the oil residue, leaving plastic surfaces clean and refreshed. This method is not only effective but also eco-friendly, utilising natural ingredients and solar energy to achieve a spotless finish without harsh chemicals.
