Cooling down on a hot summer’s day always calls for ice cream. But unfortunately, for people who are trying to live a healthier life, options are a little more scarce. There are a lot of so-called healthy versions of ice cream flooding the market, but even these often contain hidden sugars, preservatives and artificial sweeteners. So for anyone looking for a simple and delicious solution, sorbets are the way to go.
They can be made in the comfort of your kitchen without the hassle of an ice cream machine and the flavours are limited only by your imagination (and seasonal fruit maybe). Healthy sorbets can be made without any extra sweetener, or with honey if you do prefer a little more flavour.
This guilt-free dessert always starts with great quality fruit so be sure to pick fruit that’s completely ripe. It also helps if the fruit is frozen solid as this helps to create a smoother more cohesive sorbet. Aside from that, all you need is a good blender that can break down the frozen fruit and you’re good to go! Below are three variations you can try but feel free to mix and match and create your own.
Ingredients
Raspberry Sorbet
- 3 cups raspberries
- 2 tbsp. raw honey
- 1 tsp. lemon juice
- ¼ cup warm water, as needed
Watermelon Sorbet
- 3 ½ cups watermelon, diced
- 1 tsp. lime juice
- Honey to taste (if the watermelon is not sweet enough)
- ¼ cup warm water, as needed
Mango Sorbet
- 2 mangos, diced (approx. 3 1/2 cups)
- 1 tsp. lime juice
- ¼ cup warm water, as needed
Method (applicable for all variations):
- Peel and chop the fruits, and lay them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
- Freeze until completely solid, which should take at least 3-4 hours but preferably overnight.
- Place the frozen fruit into the bowl of a food processor or heavy-duty blender, along with a little raw honey, and freshly squeezed lemon juice.
- Blend until smooth.
- You may need to add a little warm water and press down with a spatula to help the process along.
- Eat immediately for a softer texture, or transfer into a freezer-safe container and freeze for 3-4 hours or until firm.
